First Byte is not defunct.  Call their switchboard at (714) 432-1740. 
If you call an older number for them, it might tell you the number has
changed, but it might not -- in any case, this number is right.  I know
because I talked to their president and one of their engineers today. 
They're in Anaheim, so call during West Coast business hours (11-3 :-).
