The problem was that my Startup-sequence was mounting the 5.25" drive (the Disk-2-Disk manual says this is a no-no). With an A2000, just don't include "mount DF2:", but with an A1000 I had to turn off the A1020's power while booting to get it to work (because I could only use DF1: for the A1020). I'm sure there's a better solution :-). Since then, I don't get write errors except when I try to use $0.50 no-name disks. I keep one box of name brand disks around for Amiga->C64 transfers.
