That's why they call them write-rings, they enable writing.

Anyone ever heard of a wrong-ring? It's a half-height ring which makes
it difficult to ever slip in a write-ring.

There was a long article on the ecology of write-rings in a past
SIGSOFT issue, worth looking up, one of the funnier things I've ever
wread.
