This may not have been what you wanted to hear, but the answer to the question of recoverability is NO. The copy wipes out the contents of the disk(DISKCOPY formats before copying, which is even worse). He should have done a backup of his work on a regular basis, which would prevent this kind of disaster(hine sight :-( ).
