SpinRite is _GREAT_: rescued one of my HDs that was giving me bad sectors all over the place, and sped up another HD by a factor of 3. Doesn't require you to back up the HD, either, tho that's a good idea the first time you use it. Be warned, though, that SpinRite won't work with Priam's products or Plus Development's HARDCARDs. They make nonstandard use of the customer service cylinder. Also, if you are using a WD 1002-27X or 1002A-27X RLL controller, you'll have to switch off the MFM emulation mode (which will require backing up your HD and then reloading all your files...) Otherwise, SpinRite seems to be compatible with just about everything. You can order it for $59 plus a couple of bucks S&H from Gibson Research, the manufacturer, at (714) 830-2200. I received my copy two days after ordering, so they must ship immediately.
