Both of these programs specify in their documentation that in order to fully utilize expanded memory that system memory should be disabled as low as possible (down to 256K on AT-type systems) and then backfilled to 640K on the expanded memory card. There is, at least with DESQview, a dramatic difference in performance when installed in this manner. I do regret the loss of use of the extra 384K of memory soldered onto the motherboard. And it is also sad to lose 384K of expanded memory to fill in what already exists. But it is worth it to me, so I live with it. It was very easy to disable the extra motherboard memory by simply moving a single jumper (as should be detailed in your system's user manual).
