This no longer applies in the distributed operating system environment- especially when this environment crosses administrative domains. I no longer look at unix systems as standalone systems that just happen to be on a network. You have to consider all systems and your network is as secure as the least secure member (without the implementation of secure routers or 3rd party authentication systems.)
