I just ran some simple tests to see if anything has improved. I simply typed "xterm" and hit the RETURN key on my Sun 3/60. RandomPlacement was turned on. The time is how long it took for the xterm window to appear. X11R3 twm ~8 seconds latest twm ~2.5 seconds no window manager ~2 seconds I think this was related to the fact that twm was not handling configure requests from unmapped windows, something that xterm does do.
