The last two issues of Micro Cornucopia have had details on building a hobbiest-type robot, mostly designed to run mazes. The project is designed such that all maze-running software is in EPROM, so one robot can be used by several people with competing software, just by changing the PROMs. This neat project even has a solid state compass, which is used to keep the robot correctly oriented.
