Well, somebody in Motorola  Semicondutor did an application note (APR2/D)
on how to tap into the digital stream in a Sony CD player and implement
a graphic equalizer digitally with a DSP56001.  A couple of grand for
development tools, and you could get one heck of a compander.  :-)
All in software.
