There is an Air Force manual (I think it is 53-10 but that is likely wrong) which outlines types of missions (like Combat Air Patrol, Fighter Sweep, and Battlefield Area Interdiction). I don't think this document is classified so you might get it from DTIC. The best source is a twelve volume classified set of manuals. However you won't get to see those even if you're cleared and have need to know. The AF won't give them to contractors (which gave me lots of problems on a previous project).
