I spoke briefly with a Coast Guard veteran, retired Officer type, who had
joined the CG in 1942 to avoid going to Europe with the Army.  He recounted
an amusing tale of being attached to the Navy and sent to be in charge
of landing craft at such garden spots as Saipan, Tinian, Tarawa and Okinawa.
