AT&T uses this device in the DMD terminals, and it works well. 

RE: the confusion of Delete with Backspace.
That's why we have xmodmap.

RE: processing in terms of user-events.
Check out what AT&T does with its SELECT/ADJUST/MENU assignments
to the mouse-buttons.

RE: X12 fixing problems with mouse-assignments.
X11 does just fine in empowering the user. Complain not to the
X Consortium but to the people who design the user-interface
toolkits and applications.
