The modems ($$$$$$$) made for cellular incluse their own error correction, but most are proprietary. There is a company in Skokie, IL called "Tellular" which makes a standard RJ-11 interface for cellular phones. Basicly it plugs in in place of the handset and gives you a standard modular jack. Plug a phone in there and pick it up... you hear dial tone. Dial, and it decodes the touch tones and makes them into what the cellular unit wants to see. Instant fake "real" phone. Great for stuff like portable pay phones, etc. (No, I don't work for them.) As to the portable (hand held) with an "RJ" its proably a ways off. Most cellular portables are already "ten lbs. of s*** it a 5 lb. bag" as it is. --- * Origin: Chicago's BIT WIZ Opus HST (AlterNet 445/689) (Opus 1:115/689) ------------------------------ Date: 12-15-89 To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: RE: RAINBOW FTP SITES From: FRANK MALLORY GT> FTP is the TCP/IP File Transfer Protocol. Sure, I know what FTP is; we have TCP/IP running on our VAX and I have a copy of the MIL-STD on FTP sitting on my desk at the moment. I know I can't use FTP from Fidonet, but I was wondering if any of the regular Fido mechanisms would work. My uucp gateway sysop answered the question by saying that only messages can be transmitted, not files. GT> of the message. I think I have all the above; I got a uuencode/decode program today that seems to work fine on the Rainbow. Do you have uudecode, George? If so, I'll zip up a couple text files, uuencode the ZIP, import it into a message, and send it off to you. You can try the same thing from your end. BTW, my gateway says the messages should be limited to 10KB; not a real lot, but evident you can break up the uuencoded files pretty easy and transmit the pieces as separate files. --- msged 1.99L MSC * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123) ------------------------------ Date: 12-15-89 To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: PRIVATE MAIL TO FIDONET From: FRANK MALLORY GT> My info comes from John Quartermain's _The Matrix_ (an excellent source GT> of info about networking, IMHO). GD> I'm sure he is porting messages to and from USENET automatically. Hi, George. My gateway (Joe Keenan) gave me directions on how to do it, also. Problem is, it requires a sysop to set it up, and George Theall doesn't yet have his own board. Kurt Reisler has compiled a list of all the (numerous) Usenet newsgroups, and I hope to get a copy of it soon. Assuming I can maintain my link to my gateway, I plan to make at least the DEC-oriented newsgroups available on this BBS. But that's not the same as integrating the conferences; that's another issue. --- msged 1.99L MSC * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123) ------------------------------ Date: 12-15-89 (15:17) To: FRANK MALLORY Subject: RE: AVAILABILITY OF CHESS From: MIKE JANSON Could you give me a list of programs available for the Rainbow? But it seems to me that you should be able to mail files, just like you mail messages. You would then need to cut of the headers, and trailors if there are any, leaving the file intact. I would guess that the file would have to be in an encoded form if it is a binary file. I would also guess that only people with private fidonet addresses could receive those files. For example, I do not think that I could receive a file on fidonet. Messages to people like me are public and I do not know how do anything with it but read and reply (perhaps I am more ignorant about this than I should be). --- ConfMail V3.31 * Origin: The Pot of Gold - (703-359-6549) (1:109/103) ------------------------------ Date: 12-15-89 To: KEN PATIENCE Subject: GENERAL From: GORDON GREEN > Hi There! > This board is new to this echo!
