Files can be sent as mail. The only caveat is that gateways generally do not handle well non-displayable characters. If the file can be viewed by typing at the screen, it will pass thru the gateways ok; otherwise, you'll need to encode it in some fashion and decode it once it's been received. uuencode/uudecode, xxencode/xxdecode, abe/dabe, and btoa/atob are examples of programs for this. FM>I think I have all the above; I got a uuencode/decode program today that FM>seems to work fine on the Rainbow. Do you have uudecode, George? If so, FM>I'll zip up a couple text files, uuencode the ZIP, import it into a message FM>and send it off to you. You can try the same thing from your end. BTW, my FM>gateway says the messages should be limited to 10KB; not a real lot, but ev FM>you can break up the uuencoded files pretty easy and transmit the pieces as FM>separate files. Yes, I have uudecode. You might get a hold of one of Richard Mark's versions of uuencode/uudecode - when encoding files you can specify the maximum size (in lines) of any single portion. Quite handy. Bush, 9/7/88 ------------------------------ Date: 12-17-89 To: FRANK MALLORY Subject: FILES UUENCODED From: DENNIS PERRY Frank, you are right, I could capture the file and uudecode it on the rainbow, as could any one else that was interested. I have not really gotten into the use of BBS messages to the extend that I know how to capture a message intact, especially with multiple screens. I normally read over 50 messages a day from the Internet and do quite a bit of FTP file transfer, both across the Internet and on our own internal TCP/IP network. I tend to use Pot-O-Gold BBS or the Silver Bullet at night to keep up, although with George now routing messages onto the Internet, I sometimes read things more than once, what with the delay in the relay. --- ConfMail V3.31 * Origin: The Pot of Gold - (703-359-6549) (1:109/103) ------------------------------ Date: 12-15-89 (14:59) To: TED STEVENS Subject: RE: MS-DOS FOR DECMATE II From: AMER NELSON Ted, this may not be helpful, but I THINK that could be an item that DEC was offering some time back from the OUTLET. I'm going to try sending a uuencoded file to George Theall. Messages coming via uucp are private (meaning only the addressee and sysop can read them). If somebody send a message addressed to you and it contains an encoded file, it seems to me that you should be able to capture using your comm program, just like any other message. I haven't looked at the uucode, but I assume it consists of only 7 bits per byte, because that is all most of the primitive IBM mainframes can handle. --- msged 1.99L MSC * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123) ------------------------------ Date: 12-16-89 To: RICK MELLON Subject: CHESS From: DAVID STRICKLER In a message of <12 Dec 89 13:42:58>, Rick Mellon (1:142/723) writes: RM> David, one MS-DOS chess game does spring to mind -- Chess Ingenuity. FM>I haven't looked at the uucode, but I assume FM>it consists of only 7 bits per byte, because that is all most of the primit FM>IBM mainframes can handle. The basic encoding algorithm used by uuencode changes three 8-bit bytes into four 6-bit characters, and then adds a space (32 ASCII) to each to make them printable. Each line starts with a character count, also encoded. Only 45 characters are usually encoded per line; thus, most lines begin with 'M' (45 == 'M' - ' ') and are 61 characters in length. Several variations on the basic algorithm exist, mainly to avoid problems introduced by differences in "the" EBCDIC character set and by brain-damaged mailers which strip off trailing blanks.
