I just went through this installing a 650MB CDC drive on my 386 clone.
The only program I found that would work for me was Speedstor and I had
to get the latest version before I got it working (I tried several others).
I also had to buy Speedcache (which I like BTW) to keep the size of DOS
down (the buffers get real big when you have large partitions).  I am
using MS-DOS 3.3.  I hear that 4.01 supports big partitions without
additional software.
