  I do not know about 3Com, but in the Novell Operating System, when a
  machine crashes, the OS does not know about it. And if it does :-), it
  doesn't care. What will happen is that the OS will think the link is
  good until that link is re-established or killed. . This can be done either
  by rebooting the workstation or clearing the station from the
  server. Either way, this will simply close the currently opened files at
  that link.
