I would expect a suit on < much more narrow grounds. But when you have 500 million+ in cash sitting in the bank, the prospect of losing some of that seems a lot less frightening than the thought of allowing other companies to compete in your narrow market segment. Just by going through the process of suing other companies that try to clone their technology and losing those lawsuits, Apple effectively creates a multi-million dollar legal barrier to entry in their market.
