I too have noticed a high-pitched whine, both when the SE/30 had an external 
hard disk and when an internal hard disk was installed.  Not everyone can
hear it (my wife cannot and doesn't understand why it would bother me).
My configuration has 5MB of memory, and is otherwise rather plain.  I've
tried taking out all of my INITs, without effect on the whine.  Anyone out
there have any ideas?
