I have had this same problem all along with Word 3.  I agree that it is very 
poor practice to not allow the user any further operations on the involved 
volume until Word has been shut down.  It seems I am always starting and 
stopping Word, just so I can shuffle a few disks and work on the variety of
files which my work requires.  (Thank goodness for On Cue!)  

Anyone found any patches or workarounds?
