I had heard the same thing from a number of sources; but when I asked our service rep, he said that as long as none of the subsystems were older than 3.0, you don't need to wipe the disk. So I didn't when I installed 3.2 on our 4D/70GT, and so far so good, with pretty heavy usage (and an ESDI disk).
