They are user-installable; I have seen the instructions. Some
heavy disassembly and screw-driver work is required, but no
soldering.  They are pricey relative to PC hard disks ($800 for
20 MB, $1050 for 40 MB), but these are competitive prices for
laptops. Last time I checked Tandy still wanted $1200 for a
20MB drive, plus installation.
 
I plan to order one next week. I'll let you all know how it
works.
