Thanks to all who replied to my original request for information.

To summarize:

I was having problems with the X11/NeWS server (OpenWindows) on our Sun 
workstations. The problem was actually in the way our BIND nameservers
were configured. The server was doing a gethostbyname() call to resolve
the hostname "localhost", which was undefined in our nameservers, thus
causing the lookup to fail. The simple resolution was to add localhost
to the nameserver database.
