There are two types of 800 numbers. The old type used a dedicated line, provided by the local telco under an AT&T contract. It could be billed based on minutes of use, since ALL use was dialed to the 800 number. Nowadays, you can also get an 800 number pointed at a real number, and it's billed from the source end (by the LD carrier providing the 800 number) and not from the minutes of use at the destination. fred
