Try Knuth, Seminumerical Algorithms.

Also, see June 1988 CACM for an article by Pierre L'Ecuyer, titled
   "Efficient and Portable Combined Random Number Generators"
There's theory and some practical examples you can put to use,
along with references at the end to other literature.
