If you are already comfortable with SYSV and X11, and don't mind spending the time buying and installing them on your 386, then it's probably better for you. I don't know if X applications on it will be much (or any) faster than NextStep applications on the NeXT. NeXT is also pretty fast if you stay away from the window system (not that I'd want to).
