Instead, I mount another partition or even a floppy as /tmp and run that way. Some people have complained of problems mounting a filesystem on /tmp. I had that once, but it sort of went away. Anyway, just rename /tmp to, say, /pmt and mkdir a new /tmp. Messy, but it works. Why don't you do all the patches under Unix?? Thats what I did, especially since the Unix machine I have access to is a good 50 times faster than my PC and has a LOT more disk space. Can you hand-edit the files with elle?
