Sigh.  I found an embarrassingly simple fix.  Instead of starting
QuickHelp directly and depending on color -> grayscale translation,
the following procedure works for my Model 55SX/Tandy monochrome VGA
monitor:

1. start an OS/2 command interpreter (in text-window or fullscreen)
2. type "MODE BW80"
3. start QuickHelp

Packaging these steps in a .CMD file and adding it to "Start
Programs" makes it a painless procedure.  Hope this is of help to
someone else.
