Also, we have the VAX/VMS version of MAPKEY but are having trouble getting it to run from a user account - access violations. Is that the way it is supposed to operate? --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/1 ------------------------------ Date: 12-21-89 To: DAVID HUGHES Subject: DEC STUFF From: JIM GREELY In a message of <19 Dec 89 23:28:00>, David Hughes (1:128/58) writes: DH>Where can I get a Rainbow HD controller card? CHESSDEMO is a DEMO version of Chess Ingenuity. I do not know where the difference is, but I am packaging DOSCHESS for delivery under the Christmas Tree. I probably will contact Carloyn and order the Chess Ingenuity. I have inherited 3 hard discs, 2 10's and the 20 that you indicated. But my controller is acting flaky except for the current hard disc that is in there. They were originally intended to run CPM applications, but the embracement of the MS-DOS/PC-DOS system by the IBM compatibles led DEC to release MS-DOS for it as well. The Rainbow wasn't an IBM-compatible system (totally), and this is what lead to its downfall, although several hundred thousand were sold. It was far ahead of the IBM PC in many respects, though: it had excellent graphics, would support up to 896kb of memory, and was a *VERY* well-engineered piece of hardware, winning several design awards, and was very reliable and robust as well. That answer your questions? You're right - in fact, it's limited to printable characters, and I believe a subset of those. I had a version around here that works on the Rainbow. I'll have to dig it up and make it available, although some better ones have been published in the comp.binary.ibm.pc newsgroup on usenet. Some haven't required that you strip the headers when a file is broken into several pieces for transmission. I know I got a copy of that -I'll post when I find it. -gary- --- * Origin: Glacier Peak Rainbow, Bellevue, WA - 206/644-8431 (Opus 1:343/3) ------------------------------ Date: 12-22-89 (07:45) To: MIKE JANSON Subject: RE: AVAILABILITY OF CHESS From: FRANK MALLORY As I said, I haven't tried either of the chess programs here; also, I no longer have a VR241, so probably couldn't tell whether the output is in color anyway. --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/1 ------------------------------
