Well in responce to the modem of choice.  I have 2 Practical Peripheral modems
and I have had no problems with the for the full 2 years  I have had them. 
They seem to be compatable with the standard term programs.  I use the modem
on an IBM at work and the Atari St at home and right now with the St emulating 
the Mac.
