Try disabling backing-store and save-unders on your server, by adding -su -bs as command line options to the server (in your Xservers file for xdm). In general, can someone point me at a document that describes the various resources and how to specify them? Not really. The X(1) man page lists some trivial things. You pretty much have to look at the documentation for each application, and then you may also have to look at the documentation for the toolkit used to build the application, in order to know what resources are available.
