The reason is that we needed saving from ourselves. God didn't have to do any of this. The process of God becoming man is more than a legal maneuver to fulfill rules. It is the God of the universe wanting to restore a relationship with His fallen creation. If you believe the Bible account, Jesus asked for there to be any other way but the way He eventually took. The idea of separation from God involved tremendous risk. But the only way to restore man's relationship was for God to become man. He became like us so that we could become like Him.
