Al,  thanks for your reply (about the Ethernet card giving bus errors)
However, I dont think this is the real problem.  I have tried several
cards (from the same supplier and batch, I admit) but the problem does
not go away.

I have taken your advice and moved boards about, but the problem stays.

Ill try a new server (given a day and a half!) next, if I can borrow
some poor souls AT...
