There is a book of Stanislav Lem, called *The Invincible* if I remember right.
It deals with the problem of the starschip The Invincible, which discovers
a planet, which is inhabitatated by Mechanical Flys. Each Fly is not
intelligent by itself, but same of them together are, and in thousands, they
are dangerous and deadly.
