Back in 1972, the IEEE Press printed a reference index on published literature
in DSP.  Has the IEEE printed a more recent (and up-to-date) edition of this
book?  [...]

If all else fails, go to the library and consult "Citation Abstracts".
It provides a way to search forward in the literature--you look up
some of the papers in the 1972 listing (by author), and CA tells you 
current papers that refer to them.
