K. & W.'s "The AWK Programming Language". Learning a language from man pages (even extensive ones) and examining others' scripts, while an important step in the process, is NOT very efficient (believe me, I've used this approach on about 5 languages, most of which I eventually got a reasonable command of, but only after many arduous hours/days/weeks/months/years of study & experimenting when a _GOOD_ tutorial would have made the job much less frustrating and time-consuming (especially for self-taught hacks like myself!)). PERL appears to be a fascinating language with considerable potential for the kind of work I do, but the syntax IS intimidating, so I will certainly welcome S&W's "The PERL Programming Language" (by any name it should smell as sweet). PLEASE make a NETWORK-WIDE ANNOUNCEMENT when it is available! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Stephen J.
