It also has the specs on AutoConfig (tm). For the most part, the difference is "how the software controlls the hardware" versus "how to connect new hardware". For example, the Hardware Reference Manual talks of things like "move.w #$7FFF,intena(a0) ;Disable interrupts" whereas the Technical Reference Manual talks of things like "the CPU asserts BG after receiving BR from the DMA device". Here's an excerpt from the tables of contents for the two: ---- Amiga Hardware Reference Manual (1989, blue cover with blue bit-mapped Amiga logo), published by Addison-Westley. Introduction, Coprocessor Hardware (programming the Copper), Playfield Hardware (setting up bit planes, dual playfields, scrolling, HAM mode, color registers), Sprite Hardware, Audio Hardware (how to play audio samples), Blitter Hardware, System Control Hardware (collision detect, interrupts), Interface Hardware (how do do I/O to floppy disk, keyboard, parallel port, serial port), Custom Chip Register Summary, Custom Chip pin-outs, System Memory Map, External Connector pin-outs, CIA (8520) chips, AutoConfig (from a software point of view), Keyboard (raw key codes), detecting A1020 vs A1010 external floppy. ---- A2000/A500 Technical Reference Manual (1987, white spiral bound with C= logo), published by Commodore. Summary of Differences (between 500/2000 and 1000), System Block Diagrams, Expansion hardware (100-pin for 2000, 86-pin for 500&1000, video slot), PC Bridgeboard slots, Amiga Hard Disk/SCSI Controller, Custom Chips voltages and timing, how much current each device can draw from +5V, Diagrams of expansion connectors, Schematics of the German A2000, the US B2000, and the A500. ---- Anyone designing boards to plug into the Amiga should read both manuals. -- Joe Smith (408)922-6220 | SMTP: JMS@F74.TYMNET.COM or jms@gemini.tymnet.com BT Tymnet Tech Services | UUCP: ...!{ames,pyramid}!oliveb!tymix!tardis!jms PO Box 49019, MS-D21 | PDP-10 support: My car's license plate is "POPJ P," San Jose, CA 95161-9019 | humorous dislaimer: "My Amiga speaks for me."
