Jeff,

I'm not sure if there is anything in the HPBASIC/UX  documentation  that
would have guided you through this, but I have it on good authority that
the 6.5  release of the X window  driver  requires  that  BASIC have the
shell variable SB_DISPLAY_ADDR set.

Try putting this in your .profile:

SB_DISPLAY_ADDR=0x0b00000
export SB_DISPLAY_ADDR
