Cost is a factor of the quality of the gun assembly, and the resolution. It gets more difficult to coat with higher res phosphor spots evenly without any flaws. If you want a flatter squarer screen, the correction circuits get more complex (=expensive) too. Leastways that's how it was when I was a TV tech. Dave E.
