I had a similar problem, and I had an old version of link sitting in the path from installing MASM. If you find an old LINK.EXE, remove it and replace it with the current one. LINK.EXE is compatible with previous versions. The problem occurred because MAKE and CL search the path for LINK, and will run the first version they find.
