Are there any other users of this (apparently) obsolete machine out there?
Anyone interested in trading technical details about the internals of the
machine?

For example, I have written a TSR that will shut the machine off if no
keys are pressed for a specified period of time (but will not shut
down if the charger is plugged in).  I can send the program to interested
parties or post if there is enough interest.
