What if his '386 box didn't have a math coprocessor? I hear the IIci's 68882 is pretty quick, especially at transcendental functions. It is conceivable that in some applications, it may be 1000 times faster. Also, the '386 box might be thrashing the hard disk due to a 1Mb MSDOS memory limitation, while the IIci may have 8Mb of RAM. This could give a speedup factor > 1000 very easily.
