You are probably right, but because I couldn't get TEXINPUTS properly
defined I simply did an \input.  Eventhough, I did manage to solve
the problem by encapsulating verbatimfiles.sty in the following:

\catcode`\@=11\relax
...
\catcode`\@=12\relax
