Message-ID: <1558@lakesys.lakesys.com> Date: 12 Jan 90 05:09:50 GMT Reply-To: tim@lakesys.lakesys.com (Timothy Winslow) Followup-To: comp.unix.questions Distribution: usa Organization: Lake Systems - Milwaukee, Wisconsin Lines: 37 Since I am not a guru, I am learning UNIX/XENIX through questions. I have HEARD of ftp-ing a file. I understand it is the "asking for a file off of another system." But my question is: HOW DO I DO THIS??? I am unsure of the format for asking for a file! Also: Can I ask for a file from a "remote" system, not hooked 24 hours to the link? Will it buffer my request, and wait till it hooks up with a system on the link, then send the request, and then when the requested file gets to that system, it'll buffer it till it again hooks with the system I call hook up to? I know "fingering" a person is not feasible, just to give you an idea what I tried. We can "finger" local people only. I know, these questions could of went onto a "unix.question" or "new.user" type news group, but it also might not get a good intelligent answer for me either. Oh yes, I have another question! How can I get XENIX to tell me if I have "NEW MAIL?" I would like a little update in my .profile, or something to tell me when I have "new mail." Instead of just "You have mail." I like to keep messages for a while, without storing them in a folder, as we have little disk space on the system I utilize, and I want to keep everything down to a minimum! The disk that the mail sits in is twice as large as the disk for personally storage. Please reply via E-Mail. I know, then the people who have the same questions can't get a full answer either, but since there are a million news groups, I don't normally read these, as they have a million questions daily! ======================================================================== | | | Timothy Winslow aka: P00h Bear, Winny, and other assorted names | | | | My outlook on life: Have fun, in whatever you do! | | | | tim@lakesys.lakesys.com or uunet!marque!lakesys!tim | | or csd4.cds.uwm.edu!lakesys.lakesys.com!tim | | | ========================================================================
