We opted for a hardware solution and added some resistors (around 40 kiloOhms) to the cables we use. Leaving the terminals on wasn't a solution for us, because some of them are hooked through switch boxes to connect them to multiple machines. Unfortunately, I'm not an RS-232 wizard and don't recall which lines we connected. If you want more info, mail me and I'll dig it up.
