LD_LIBRARY_PATH is supposed to be a colon-separated list of directories that are searched when the runtime loader tries to resolve references to shared libraries. After creating the shared libraries for X, you may also wish to rerun ldconfig to update the link editor's cache. I haven't noticed that it makes much difference, but the man pages imply that there's a performance gain from doing it.
