The ISO 497-crayon standard is still in committee. The French delegation raised objections to the standard pronunciation of "mauve", so it may be a while longer. In the mean time, the 72-crayon box is useful, lighter weight, fits in a more regularly-shaped box, easier to keep sharp, less costly at replacement time due to meltdown or teeth-cutting/cat-chewing, and universally available. Even though it's not an International Standard.
