I also wanted to add to my previous post that after extensive investigation,
(ie, looking in every source file I could find), I could not find where the
definition of the app-defaults directory was ever used.  That is, I couldn't
find a file that used the variable XAPPLOADDIR.  The file ./lib/Xt/Initialize.c
is compiled with -DXAPPLOADDIR=<the dir I specified>, but it's never
referenced.

Does this make sense?
