    I go to the top of the server directory and type: make all, and the
    *everything* below this tree is built. (mkfontdir, etc...) Is this
    necessary?

Mostly, yes.  The server uses a file out of the mkfontdir directory; it
could have just built that one file, but it was easier to just to a make
in that directory.  Everything else it tries to build, it needs.
