Are there any XPseudoRoot wizards out there?

I was depending on the use of XPseudoRoot for an application I am writing but
am reluctant to use it because of the stern warnings at the top of the source
code.  What I would like to know is (a) what makes it incompatible with future
releases of X (especially R4, from which it is notably missing), (b) what I can
do to make it compatible, and (c) if anybody (e.g., the  author) can shed some
light on how it works.
